Wavelength Reef Cruises runs one of Port Douglas’ most respected full-day outer reef snorkel tours. Locally owned and operated by marine biologists, the focus is on small groups, expert interpretation, and giving guests a genuine close-to-nature reef experience rather than a crowded day-trip.
The boat carries a maximum of 48 passengers on a vessel built for 100. That ratio matters. You get space on deck, personal attention in the water, and a crew that actually has time to talk to you.
Eco certified and climate-active: Wavelength holds Advanced Eco Tourism certification and is a recognised Climate Action Business. They do not serve red meat or prawns on board, for environmental reasons.
What to Expect on the Day
You check in at the Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina at 8.10am and depart shortly after. The marina is a short walk from most central Port Douglas accommodation, with free all-day parking available.
The journey to the outer reef takes around 90 minutes. En route, the crew fits you with snorkelling gear, covers what to look out for, and introduces the day. Dolphins are commonly spotted along the way, and in winter there is a good chance of seeing dwarf minke or humpback whales.
Three Outer Reef Sites
The skipper selects three reef sites on the day based on conditions, drawing from a range of exclusive outer reef moorings. The aim is always to show you the best reef and the widest variety of reef types.
- Site one is free snorkelling with crew in the water to help you get going
- Site two includes a guided snorkel tour led by a marine biologist, with the opportunity to encounter reef creatures up close
- Site three is a final free-swim session, a good chance to explore further with your new understanding of the reef
Marine Biology Reef Talk
During lunch, one of the marine biologists runs an interactive reef talk. It is optional, but most guests find it one of the highlights of the day.
