Previously called ‘Brett’s Outback Tasting Adventures’
Outback Tasting Adventures is a full-day food and wine tour through the Atherton Tablelands, departing directly from Port Douglas. Run by Kuranda Outback Tours, it visits boutique producers, a working dairy, a rainforest winery, and North Queensland’s first distillery, all set against the volcanic farmland and World Heritage rainforest of the Tablelands.
This is an adults-only experience for guests who want to trade the reef for something a little different.
Outback Tasting Adventures
A day of eating, drinking, and exploring the Atherton Tablelands with a small group and a knowledgeable local guide. You travel through open savannah plains, lush rainforest, and rolling farmland, stopping at some of the region’s best-loved producers along the way.
The day begins at Ellis Beach Bar and Grill on the beachfront Captain Cook Highway, where you sit down to a relaxed tropical breakfast with ocean views. Gourmet breakfast sandwiches are served on share platters, including bacon and egg brioche, smoked brisket Reuben, smoked chicken with truffle aioli, and a vegan ciabatta option. Sweet nibbles and your choice of espresso coffee, tea, or hot chocolate are included.
From there the day moves inland through a series of stops:
- Emerald Creek Ice Creamery – Homemade ice cream and sorbet made from local ingredients
- Lake Barrine Teahouse – A lakeside lunch at a historic teahouse on the edge of a volcanic crater lake, surrounded by World Heritage rainforest
- Curtain Fig Tree – A brief stop at one of the Tablelands’ most striking natural landmarks
- Gallo Dairyland – A working dairy and gourmet cheese factory spread across 1,000 acres of volcanic farmland, with cheese and chocolate tastings
- The Humpy – Seasonal tropical fruits, freshly roasted peanuts, macadamia nuts, jams, sauces, and dried fruits from local growers
- Mt. Uncle Distillery – North Queensland’s first distillery and 2017 Australian Distiller of the Year, with a tasting of award-winning spirits and liqueurs
- The Platypus Hut – The final stop: a private 160-acre rainforest property where you sit back and sip on Shannonvale Tropical Wines before the scenic return drive through the Julatten Range
