Ironman Cairns – June 14, 2026

One of the most breathtaking endurance events in the world, Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns returns on Sunday, 14 June 2026, bringing athletes from across the globe to test their strength, stamina, and determination in the heart of Tropical North Queensland. Set against a backdrop of crystal-clear waters, rainforest-covered mountains, and stunning coastal roads, this iconic race has earned its nickname the Race in Paradise for very good reason.

2026 marks the 15th anniversary of the event, and it is also a 2026 IRONMAN World Championship Qualifier, making it one of the most significant editions yet. It was recently voted #1 Best Race in Oceania at the IRONMAN Athletes’ Choice Awards, based on athlete surveys from races around the world. If you have been thinking about entering, this is the year.

The Course – A Spectacular Challenge

IRONMAN Cairns offers the full distance: a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike leg, and a 42.2km marathon run, with a course that showcases some of the most stunning scenery in Australia.

Swim – 3.8km at Palm Cove

The race begins at Palm Cove, where athletes take on a 3.8km open-water ocean swim along Williams Esplanade. The course is two laps, with the swim exit further north towards transition. A self-seeded rolling start with four zones means you choose your start position based on your estimated swim time. The course has been refined for 2026, pulled closer to shore to reduce the effects of wind and with additional buoys added for better sighting.

Bike – 180km along the Captain Cook Highway

From Palm Cove, athletes head north along the famous Captain Cook Highway towards Port Douglas, passing the iconic Rex Lookout with breathtaking views over the Pacific Ocean and the coastal rainforest. The course ventures into the Douglas Shire region before looping back south for a second lap. After completing two laps, riders continue south, heading into Cairns CBD and Transition 2 at Fogarty Park. With the Great Barrier Reef on one side and ancient rainforest on the other, this is considered one of the most scenic cycling routes in Australia.

Run – 42.2km along the Cairns Esplanade

The 42.2km marathon is a four-lap course along the stunning Cairns Esplanade, running in an anti-clockwise direction. Each lap takes athletes past the TriClub Village and the Cairns Esplanade developments, with thousands of spectators lining the route and an electric atmosphere all the way to the famous red and black finish line carpet. Aid stations are positioned approximately every 2km.

Road Closures & Travel Considerations
